We got to visit an old favorite last weekend—the Hemlock Inn in Bryson City, North Carolina. Longtime Sweet Tea readers may remember one of the first newsletters was a conversation with Mort White, the innkeeper at the Hemlock Inn. Stephen and I found the place by accident a few years ago, and we enjoyed it so much we took the kids there last summer. They were operating under COVID protocols then, but everything is back to normal now.
Last weekend, we took the entire Jacobs clan for our yearly family reunion, and it was truly a lovely and relaxing weekend for everyone. Our party ranged in age from not quite two to ninety-five, and we all had a great time. We took a ride on the Smoky Mountain Railroad through the Nantahala Gorge, which was a good activity that could accommodate all ages, we had a crew who enjoyed tubbing on Deep Creek while another took a rafting trip on the Nantahala River with the Nantahala Outdoor Center, and Saturday afternoon, Stephen and I set ourselves up at Bryson City Outdoors, a combo craft beer/cider taproom and outfitters shop, and collected Jacobs family members at our patio table as they wandered through downtown Bryson City.
At the inn, we played corn hole and bocce ball on the front lawn, ping pong on the back patio, and a big stack of board games we brought with us in the main room. We also spent a lot of time rocking in whatever chair was close at hand. Our matriarch uses a walker to assist in getting around, and she had no trouble maneuvering around the inn and inside her cottage. Plus, she declared the food delicious.
The Hemlock Inn remains one of our favorite out of the way finds, and if you missed Sweet Tea’s interview with its always gracious innkeeper, Mort White, you can read it here.
Stephen and I are heading into the wilds of Maine tomorrow, so Sweet Tea will be on hiatus next week. We are leaving our computers and all our cares at home and look forward to a relaxing week in a part of the country we have never visited. If you follow me on social media, be on the lookout for pictures from Baxter State Park and Acadia National Park. Can’t wait!
Until next time,
Karla
